Sober October Is Easier With Company

If you’re a few weeks into Sober October, you’ve probably noticed that the hard part isn’t turning down a drink. It’s everything around it. The Friday that feels longer than usual. The group chat planning the pub. The little ritual that used to end the day with a glass.

Maybe you started on 1 October and the finish line is in sight. Maybe you joined a little later, or you’re still weighing it up. Wherever you are, the same things tend to help. And a month off doesn’t have to follow the calendar: it can start on any date you choose.

What a month off can and can’t do

A month off can show you what you’ve been missing. Many people notice better sleep, a steadier mood, more energy and a bit more money in their pocket. Research on Dry January, the same idea in a different month, backs this up: a review of 16 studies linked an alcohol-free month with improvements in sleep, mood and energy.

What’s harder is making it last. In a nationwide survey conducted earlier this year, around three quarters of people fell off the wagon after Dry January. That isn’t a failing. A month off gives you a break from alcohol, but the routines and cues around it tend to be waiting when the month is over.

Support helps it stick

That’s why we think of support as part of the change, not an add-on. A month off tells you a lot about yourself: what triggers a drink, which moments feel hardest, what you’d like “less” to look like. Support gives you somewhere to take all of that and turn it into a plan, so the change isn’t left to willpower alone.

Research on Dry January points the same way: people who used support tools were significantly more likely to finish the month and to keep drinking less afterwards.

Our programme is built around that idea. It’s based on The Sinclair Method, and it wraps support around every step, from guided onboarding to a weekly session led by a coach, with a community of people on the same path. If you’d like the science behind it, The Sinclair Method, Explained goes into the detail.

Inside our weekly sessions

Every week, we host a session led by one of our coaches. It’s entirely optional, and it’s where people share their wins, talk through the tricky moments and hear from others who are going through the same thing. You decide how visible you want to be: join with your camera off, using a different name, or anonymously.

If you’re curious why regular check-ins matter so much, we’ve written about that in How Weekly Support Sessions Can Keep You on Track.

What people share

Here are a few recent highlights from our weekly sessions, shared anonymously:

A member shared making it through social events and stopping at two small drinks, which was a significant shift.
One member shared the subtle but real changes they’ve noticed: less interest in finishing a leftover glass of wine, more present in conversations with family, less pull toward “one more. ”
Someone approaching a year on the programme no longer feels the pull toward alcohol and only has the odd drink when socialising.

Individual experiences vary, and everyone decides what progress looks like for them.

Small things that help

Tell someone. Not the whole office, just one person who’ll check in on how it’s going. If you’d rather not tell anyone you know, our weekly session is a good place to share it with people who understand.

Plan the tricky moments. Know what you’ll order, and how you’ll leave, before the evening starts.

Swap the ritual, not just the drink. If a glass used to mark the end of the day, find something else that does.

A quick note on safety

If you have a health condition, or drink regularly and heavily enough that your body may have become used to alcohol, speak to your GP before stopping suddenly or cutting back sharply (NHS guidance).

Whatever you decide, you don’t have to do it alone. If you’d like to see whether our programme could be right for you, you can learn more here or check your eligibility.
