The Quiet Revolution Happening in Your Sleep

There's a familiar ritual many of us know well: a glass of wine to wind down, a way to signal to the body that the day is finally over. And in the short term, it can feel like it works. Alcohol has a sedative effect that makes falling asleep feel easier. But here's what's happening once the lights go out.

While sometimes in the short term, having some wine can act as a sedative to help you fall asleep, alcohol massively disrupts normal sleep patterns. The sedation wears off in the early hours, and as your body metabolises the alcohol, it shifts into a lighter, more restless state. REM sleep, the deeply restorative phase linked to memory, mood regulation, and emotional processing, gets cut short.

You may not even notice it happening. But your body does.

Studies have shown that people who drink see a 24%reduction in REM sleep after drinking, and are more likely to wake in the night.

People who drink regularly tend to sleep lighter and have less restorative sleep, which in turn affects mood and energy levels. It's a cycle that can go unnoticed for years, assuming that tiredness is just part of life, that waking at 3am is normal, that needing caffeine to function is simply how mornings work.

It doesn't have to be that way.

"The biggest benefit since starting Nul and drinking less has been sleeping so deeply and throughout the night. I had no idea sleep could be like that." –Jasmine, January 2026

While Jasmine started the Nul programme for health reasons, she was surprised at just how much better her nights became. For the first time in her life, she was sleeping through the entire night and waking up as a whole different person.

Jasmine's experience isn't unusual. When you reduce the number of drinks in your week, your body begins to recover its natural sleep architecture: the deep, slow-wave cycles that do the actual repair work. You start waking up feeling rested rather than merely conscious. You notice more patience, more clarity, a lighter quality to your days that's hard to explain until you've felt it.

Better days start with better sleep.

The most surprising thing for many Nul members is the mornings. Waking before the alarm and not dreading it. Feeling, for once, like sleep actually did something.
